How to teach old newbies

I'm part of an outdoor adventure group with mostly folks in their 40s to 50s and a few have shown interest in learning to sail. While I've got sufficient experience on keelboats, Ive never taught sailing, especially not to beginners in this age range. We'll likely be using whatever small boats we can get our hands on like a Sunfish or similar dinghies. I've already given them a headsup that capsizing is part of the learning curve!!

Just remember, they might not have the same 'bounce back' as kids from a capsize, so emphasize the capsize recovery skills repeatedly. Focus on building confidence.
Maybe start with very light winds until they get the feel for it.
and yes, make it clear that the goal isn't immediate mastery, but comfortable competence and having a blast!

Keep it fun and low-pressure, especially on breezy days. Light and breezy. I'm sure most of them will learn faster than you think once they stop worrying about tipping over.

I agree, confidence and fun should come first, especially if theyre not as quick to recover. We'll definitely ease into it with light wind days and keep capsize drills low-pressure and repetitive. Did you find any particular tricks or exercises helped them get more comfortable with recovery?
